You cannot just know the number of schools that you should apply to for admission. It all depends on the time that you have and how you can arrange all the needed requirements in the given time for all the colleges that you have selected. Applying for admission in schools like Princeton University and University of Chicago might be your dream come to, but along with it comes a number of responsibilities that you must complete along with your college application. To begin with, how many colleges should you apply to? One? Or more than one? Well, applying just to one college should not be the case. Why? Because there are so many students applying from different corner of the world to each and every university, if you apply for admission in just one college, there is a high chance of you not being accepted, considering the competitive situation. So, as a student, you must keep your options open and apply to at least more than one school.
Now the number of schools you wish to apply to should not exceed the number 10 because the college admission procedure for one single college is very hectic. It might get very difficult for you to manager admission to more than 10 schools, all at one time. It might get more confusing as well, as you will have to keep the deadlines in mind for so many colleges. And as a matter of fact, there are chances you might miss out on important deadlines for some of them, which will directly hinder you from getting admission in that specific school.
In addition to this, there is a certain amount of fees that must be paid to get an application form from each college. This might be an added cost for you if you want to apply to more than 10 colleges. So a better idea for you is to apply to a small number of colleges, say 3 to 5 schools, and select these schools wisely, depending on your qualification, your future plans and your financial situation.
