Can students apply in the early action pool as well as the regular decision in the same year?

Universities like UNC Chapel hill, Case Western Reserve and University of Michigan do provide their applicants with the option of applying for early action, however, applicants are only allowed to apply once in an academic year. The only second chance you might have is in the case that the admission committee defers your application.
